NGC 97 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E in the constellation Andromeda on the northern sky . It is an estimated 220 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. Together with six other galaxies, it forms the NGC 108 group ( LGG 5 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 74 and NGC 76 .
The object was discovered on September 16, 1828 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
