NGC 174 is a lenticular galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky . It is an estimated 159 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 65,000 ly. 
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 1555 .
The object was discovered on September 27, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
