NGC 196 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 194 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 173 , NGC 192 , NGC 197 , NGC 201 and NGC 237 , it forms the Hickson compact group HCG 7 or NGC 192 group .

The object was discovered on December 28, 1790 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
