IC 40 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 246 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 70,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 182 , NGC 198 , NGC 200 , NGC 208 , among others .
The object was discovered on January 8, 1894 by Stéphane Javelle .
