NGC 178 = IC 39 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb / P in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic. It is estimated 67 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 187 , NGC 207 , NGC 210 , IC 41 .
The object was discovered on November 3, 1885 by the American astronomer Ormond Stone . On August 26, 1892, Stéphane Javelle rediscovered the galaxy, which was included in the IC catalog as IC 39 .
