IC 42 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 735 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 150,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 187 , IC 36 , IC 37 , IC 38 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 25, 1892 .
