IC 36 is a compact galaxy with extended star formation from the Hubble type C in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 313 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 187 , IC 37 , IC 38 , IC 42 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 25, 1892 .
