IC 17 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation whale south of the ecliptic . It is around 197 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 20,000 light years .
The galaxy was discovered on August 19, 1892 by Stéphane Javelle .
