The article contains a detailed description of the equatorial Guinean national soccer team for women at world championships . Equatorial Guinea took part in qualifying for the 2003 World Cup for the first time, but has so far only qualified for a World Cup finals and is the third African team to take part in a World Cup finals. In the all-time table, the team is fifth from last. Equatorial Guinea is the second smallest country (approx. 28,000 km²) that has ever participated in a women's world championship and also has the lowest population (1,300,000, as of 2017) of all previous participants. Equatorial Guinea is the second country after the Republic of China from which only women qualified for a World Cup. In 2015, the Thai women also managed to do this .

The tournaments

World Cup 1991 to 1999

The Equatorial Guinean national soccer team played an international match for the first time in 2002 and therefore did not take part in the first three world championships or the African championships that serve as qualifications . During this time Nigeria and in 1999 Ghana qualified for the World Cup from Africa .

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. Equatorial Guinea also wanted to qualify for the 2002 African Football Championship for women , which again served as a World Cup qualifier. On August 10, 2002, Equatorial Guinea played their first international match against Angola in Dar es Salaam and lost 3-0. 14 days later they lost 3-1 at home in Malabo . The elimination in the first round was perfect. Angola made it to the finals of the African Championship on penalties in the second round , but were eliminated in the preliminary round. Nigeria and Ghana again qualified for Africa.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . Equatorial Guinea was then able to qualify for the first time for the 2006 African Football Championship for women , which again served as qualification . In the first round of qualification, the first game in Angola was lost 2: 3, but the second leg was won 3: 1. In the second round, Equatorial Guinea should face Nigeria. Since Gabon resigned as host of the African Cup of Nations, Nigeria became host and therefore did not have to qualify. The qualifying matches between Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria therefore did not take place and Equatorial Guinea was thus qualified for the African Championship. At the African Cup of Nations, they both met in the first game and Equatorial Guinea lost 4-2. In the second game against South Africa there was a 0-2. Since Algeria - the third group opponent - had also lost to Nigeria and South Africa, the last group game between Equatorial Guinea and Algeria was meaningless for the championship, but it was a game with many goals that ended 3: 3. From Africa, Nigeria and Ghana ultimately qualified again.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

Starting line-ups in Equatorial Guinea's first World Cup game

After Equatorial Guinea had used the home advantage and two years later in the 2008 African Cup of Nations could dethrone champions Nigeria, the team also wanted for the World Cup in Germany qualify . To do this, they first had to qualify for the 2010 African Championship . The opponent in the qualification was Namibia , which renounced the second leg after a 1: 5 home defeat. In the preliminary round of the championship they had to be content with a 2-2 win against Cameroon in the first game, but with a 1-0 win against Algeria and a 3-1 against Ghana they were still group winners. With a 3-1 in the semifinals against South Africa they qualified for the first time for the World Cup finals. The 2: 4 defeat in the final against Nigeria, which put the situation in African women's football back on track, could be coped with.

In Germany, Equatorial Guinea was drawn into a group with ex-world champions Norway , vice world champions Brazil and Australia . In the first game, the newcomer to the World Cup was 0-0 against the Norwegians for a long time, but had to accept the 0-1 in the 84th minute. They fell behind against Australia in the 8th minute, but Genoveva Añonma scored the first World Cup goal for the newcomer in the 21st minute . In the second half, the Australians scored two more goals before Añonma scored 3-2 with seven minutes left. This meant that Equatorial Guinea had no chance of reaching the quarter-finals before the game against Brazil. The last group game against Brazil was then lost 3-0, with the 0-0 being held until the 49th minute. As the bottom of the group, Equatorial Guinea said goodbye to the World Cup for at least eight years.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Four years later, the new World Cup qualification failed . Equatorial Guinea could not benefit from the fact that the number of starting places for the third World Cup in North America had been increased to 24 and the Africans were now given three places.

Equatorial Guinea was eliminated in qualifying for the 2014 African Championship in Namibia . In the second round, for which Equatorial Guinea was qualified as winners of the African Cup of Nations 2012 , the team failed on Ivory Coast due to the away goals rule . After a 1: 1 in the away game, the 2: 2 in the home game was not enough. The Ivory Coast then benefited from the increase in the starting places and qualified third for the World Cup for the first time. In addition, Nigeria qualified for the seventh time as African champions and Cameroon runners-up for the first time.

World Cup 2019 in France

On October 5, 2017, the Equatorial Guinea team was excluded from the World Cup in the event of a successful qualification, as they had used several ineligible players in the qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games. Therefore, although she was able to take part in the qualification for the 2018 African Cup , she also deployed a player who was not eligible to play, so that she was disqualified despite successful qualification and the starting place was initially awarded to the Kenyans. On November 7, 2018, the disqualification was lifted after protest and Equatorial Guinea was admitted to the tournament. At the tournament, the team lost the three group games against Zambia (0: 5), South Africa (1: 7) and Nigeria (0: 6) and thus suffered the highest defeats in their international history. Due to the non-admission to the World Cup finals, the team fell three places in the all-time table .
