The article contains a detailed description of the Ivorian national soccer team for women at world championships . The Ivory Coast took part in qualifying for the 2003 World Cup for the first time, but was not able to qualify for the 2015 World Cup finals until 2014 and is the fifth African team to take part in a World Cup finals. The Ivory Coast has been the weakest team to qualify for a World Cup since the FIFA world rankings were introduced . In December 2014, the team finished 65th. Previously, Equatorial Guinea was the weakest team in 2011 as 56th in the ranking. After three defeats in the preliminary round, Ivory Coast placed third from bottom of the all-time table and fell to penultimate place in 2019, as teams added and a team that had previously been worse placed won points or conceded fewer goals.

The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

Ivory Coast took part in the 1988 Women's FIFA Invitational Tournament in the People's Republic of China , where it played three games against the Netherlands , Canada and China , but after that no international match was played for four years. At the African Cup of women in 1991 , as qualifying for the first World Cup served to women, Ivory Coast, therefore, did not participate. Nigeria qualified for the World Cup from Africa .

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

The Ivory Coast played another game against France in 1992, but then it was not played for ten years. At the African Cup of women in 1995 , as qualifying for the second World Cup served to women, Ivory Coast, therefore, did not participate. Nigeria qualified for the World Cup again from Africa.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

The Ivory Coast also did not take part in the 1998 African Football Championship for women , which again served as a qualification for the first women's World Cup in the United States . Nigeria qualified for the World Cup from Africa this time, and Ghana for the first time .

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. The Ivory Coast wanted to qualify for the 2002 African Cup of Nations, which again served as a World Cup qualifier , despite the civil war . On August 10, 2002, they played their first qualifying game in Abidjan after a 10-year international break and came to a 3: 3 against Mali . The second leg 14 days later in Bamako ended 1-1, so that the Ivory Coast were eliminated on the away goals rule . After two goalless draws against Morocco in the second round, Mali made it to the finals of the African Championship on penalties , but was eliminated in the preliminary round. Nigeria and Ghana again qualified for Africa.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . The Ivory Coast was again unable to qualify for the 2006 African Football Championship for women , which again served as a qualification . After two 1-1 draws against Benin , the penalty shoot-out was lost 3-4. Benin then failed in the second round to Mali. Nigeria and Ghana qualified again from Africa.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The Ivorians again did not qualify for the World Cup in Germany . For the 2010 African Cup of Nations, they had to play against Gabon in the qualifying round and won both games (2-1 and 3-1). In the first qualifying round they then lost with the same results against Nigeria, which together with Equatorial Guinea then qualified for the World Cup.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Starting line-ups in the 1st World Cup game in Ivory Coast

Four years later, the first World Cup qualification succeeded . For the third World Cup in North America, the number of starting places was increased to 24 and the Africans were now given three places, from which the Ivorians benefited.

For the African Cup of Nations 2014 in Namibia , Ivory Coast qualified first with two wins against Mali (4-0 and 1-0) and then due to the away goals rule against the last World Cup participant Equatorial Guinea with a 1-1 home game and a 2-2 win Return leg. In the group stage they lost 4-2 to Nigeria, then won 3-1 against hosts Namibia and reached the semi-finals with a 1-1 draw against Zambia as second in the group. Here they lost to Cameroon 1: 2 after extra time. Cameroon was thus qualified for the first time for the World Cup finals. In the game for third place, which was important for the World Cup qualification for the first time, the Ivory Coast surprisingly prevailed with a goal in the 85th minute against South Africa , which had even participated in the 2012 Olympic Games, and also qualified for the first time for the World Cup. In addition, Nigeria qualified as African champions for the seventh time.

When the groups were drawn, Ivory Coast was not seeded and group B with European champions Germany was drawn. In addition, the team met runner-up European champions Norway and Thailand , which also took part for the first time. Ivory Coast had never played against any of the group opponents before.

In the first game against the European champions they not only suffered the highest defeat in their history with a 0:10, but also the highest defeat of a World Cup newcomer in their first World Cup game. Against Thailand, the smallest player in the tournament, Ange N'Guessan , who is only 1.40 m tall, gave her team the lead with the Ivorians' first World Cup goal. However, they could not defend them and had to accept two goals in the first half and the third goal in the second after a confusion in their own penalty area. Against weak Thai women in the final phase with a robust style of play they managed to hit the next goal and almost equalized, but in the end they left the place as losers with 2: 3. Against the runner-up European champions they drew a respectable 1: 3 out of the affair, with N'Guessan scoring her second World Cup goal with a remarkable long-range shot. With three defeats, the Ivorians then eliminated as bottom of the group. The commentators used in particular the performance of the Ivorians - but also the Ecuadorians - as an indication that the increase in the field of participants to 24 teams came too early.

World Cup 2019 in France

The qualification for the third World Cup in Europe takes place for the African teams via the 2018 African Football Championship for women , which is to take place in Ghana from November 17 to December 1, 2018 . The three best teams in the tournament can qualify for the World Cup. In qualifying for this championship, the Ivorians were able to eliminate Morocco in the first round due to the away goals rule , for which a goalless draw after the 1-1 draw in Morocco at home was enough. In the second round, they met Mali in June 2018, which had reached the second round without a fight, as the first round opponent Sierra Leone withdrew before the first game. If the Ivorians had benefited from the away goals rule in the first round, they failed because of the away goals rule, because after a 2-2 home game, the second leg in Mali ended goalless. Due to the non-qualification for the World Cup finals, the team fell five places in the all-time table .

Games

Ivory Coast played three games in their first appearance and lost all of them. Since it was the first against these teams, it is also the biggest defeat against these teams. Seven players were used in all three games. The 1.40 m tall Ange N'Guessan scored the most goals (2).
