Hosts Equatorial Guinea used their home advantage and surprisingly became African champions with a 2-1 final win over South Africa . After seven Nigerian triumphs in a row, another team won the title for the first time.
A total of 22 national teams were registered for the qualification. The qualification was played in two knockout rounds in two legs. The 16 weaker nations met in the first round. The eight winners and six other national teams determined the seven participants for the final round.

The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team plays each other once. The group winners and runners reach the semifinals and play there in the knock-out system "crosswise" to today. The semi-final winners reach the final, the losers play for third place. From the semi-finals onwards, if the score is tied, there will be an extra time of two times fifteen minutes and if there is still no winner, a penalty shoot-out .
