history
The city was founded by Great Britain in 1827 as Port Clarence . At first it was used as a naval base, which aimed to prevent the slave trade. Many freed slaves were resettled there until Sierra Leone was established as a colony for freed slaves. Many of the former slaves were relocated to Sierra Leone, others stayed in the Malabo area, and their descendants can still be found there today. When the island of Bioko returned to Spanish ownership in 1843, the city was renamed Santa Isabel . Many buildings from the era of Spanish colonial architecture are still preserved today and shape the cityscape of the old town, highlights are in particular the imposing Gothic- style cathedral, completed in 1916 by Luís Segarra Llairadó , and the presidential palace, both located in the Plaza de la Independencia .
From 1916 to 1919, numerous Germans from the Cameroonian Schutztruppe lived on the island . Two almost forgotten monuments still remember her, they were exposed again by the German embassy in 2009 and wreaths were laid on them for the first time.
The nationwide elections to provincial assemblies as part of Spain's first concessions to demands for emancipation led to the first local mayor, Wilwardo Jones Níger , on June 21, 1960 . He has since been followed by Abilio Balboa Arking (June 1961–?), Antonio Ribeiro Ebuera , Julio Bonete Eiye , Vidal Djoni Bekoba , Tomás Alfredo King Tomas , Rosendo Toichoa , Felipe Beta Tobachi , Antonio Reibeira Ebuera , Elias Manuel Macho Ricacha , Basilio Cañadas Idjabe , Cristina Djombe Djangani , Vicente Ebong Uwa , Bernardino Edu Oba , Victorino Bolekia Bonay and Gabriel Mba Bela (2000–?). In 2013 the mayoress was María Coloma Edjang Bengono
Santa Isabel was named the capital of the new state of Equatorial Guinea in 1969. In 1973 it was renamed Malabo as part of a campaign by then President Francisco Macías Nguema to replace European place names with African ones , it was named after a king of the Bubi , Löpèlo Mëlaka .
Economy and Infrastructure
The Malabo International Airport or Saint Isabel Airport is the largest airport in Equatorial Guinea and is located about nine kilometers west of Malabo.
The Punta Europa , an industrial area of around 15 km² on the coast northwest of Malabo, has the greatest influence on the current situation in Malabo. Various US companies, including Marathon Ashland Petroleum , EG LNG , Atlantic Methanol and others, operate a base for the production of natural gas and crude oil on Punta Europa . Punta Europa also operates its own pier there, where ocean-going ships can be refueled. Marathon Ashland Petroleum says it produces around 3.7 million tons of liquefied gas at Punta Europa.
