After Nigeria took a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute of the game, South African fans threw bottles and other objects at linesman Pamela Ochieng ( Kenya ), who had correctly indicated no offside, and Nigerian players. There were later fights with Nigerian fans. The police used tear gas to break up the rioters. After three attempts to whistle the game again failed, the game was abandoned. Later the African Association declared Nigeria the winner.
