Qualification for Women's soccer World Cup

The African Football Championship for women , officially the Africa Women Cup of Nations ( French Coupe d'Afrique des nations féminine , also Africa Cup of women ; until 2015 African Women Championship / Championnat d'Afrique de football féminin ), is organized by the African Football Association organized continental championship in women's football. The tournament has been held every two years since 1998 and is used to determine the African champions in women's football . The tournaments, which are played a year before the women's soccer World Cup, also serve as qualifications for the world tournament. Africa was initially entitled to one place, two places from 1999 and three teams have been able to qualify for the World Cup since 2014.

The record winners and reigning titleholders are the Nigerians , who have won eight out of ten tournaments so far. In addition, the Nigerians won the two events in 1991 and 1995, which the African Football Association CAF does not consider to be the official African championship for women.

The competition has been officially named Africa Women Cup of Nations since 2015 .

First participations

At all African Championships up to 2016 there was always at least one national football team that took part in an African Cup of Nations finals for the first time. In 2018, for the first time, no newcomer will participate. Below is a list of the 23 first-time participants. A total of 56 national football associations are represented in the CAF , but only 45 of these represent a women's national team.

  • Teams in bold became African champions when they first participated.

Remarks:

  • At the African Championships in 1991 and 1995, there was no final tournament in a host country, and thus no qualifying games for this. The teams that took part in the games in the 1991 and 1995 tournaments are therefore statistically considered to be “finalists”.
  • In years with "*", the championship also served as qualification for the next world championship.
