The African Cup of Women 1998 ( Engl. : African Women Championship , French. : Championnat d'Afrique de football féminin ) was the first official playout of the African continental championship in women's football and ran from 17 to 30 October in Nigeria instead. For the first time, a final tournament was held in a host country. The venues were Abeokuta and Kaduna . Because of the withdrawal from Mozambique, only 7 of the 8 qualified teams took part.

Host Nigeria made use of their home advantage and became African champions for the third time in a row and qualified together with finalist Ghana for the 1999 Women's World Cup in the USA.

mode

The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four. Within the preliminary round groups, each team plays each other once. The group winners and the group runner-up with the best points reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the final, the semi-final losers play for third place.

qualification

The final round participants were determined in a knockout round with two legs. Hosts and defending champions Nigeria automatically qualified for the finals.
