National soccer team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A national soccer team represents a member association in international competitions.

As a rule, only one national team competes in each sport for each sovereign state . However, there are a few exceptions, which are often historical or political. For example, the World Football Association has 211 members , although there are only 194 sovereign states . The United Kingdom has the four oldest national football teams ( England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland ). Another example is the New Caledonia national team , which is part of France .

Furthermore, in some sports there are national teams that are graded according to age groups, for example a U21 national team for players under the age of 21 is formed in football . The national team is generally referred to as the first selection team (also A-selection), without age restriction.

Only in a national soccer team

In the implementing provisions , Articles 5 to 8, of the FIFA Statutes , the World Football Association has regulated that football players may only compete for an senior national team.

Before 2004 it was therefore not possible to change associations, not even if you had only played youth matches for a country. Then the rule was changed so that every player who had not yet played an A international match in an official competition was allowed to change countries, so that, for example, Tim Cahill was able to change associations, or Jermaine Jones , who had only been in Friendly matches had been used. In the meantime, a change period has been set, after which a player may not have played an A international match and must decide on an association by the age of 21 if he has already been used in a junior international match.

However, this article of the FIFA rules only applies to countries that are members of the world football association. Jocelyn Angloma has been playing for the Guadeloupe national soccer team since 2006 , although he has already played 37 full international matches for the French national soccer team . This is only possible because Guadeloupe is a CONCACAF but not a FIFA member. It can be used in competitions organized by the North and Central American and Caribbean Football Associations, such as the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2007 .

FIFA only allows several national teams to be used if one association joins another (GDR association joins the DFB) or an association dissolves (USSR) or part of an association leaves it (e.g. Serbia-Montenegro is divided into Montenegro and Serbia).

Before the change, it was possible to play in two national teams one after the other. Ferenc Puskás played for Hungary in the 1954 World Cup and for Spain in the 1962 World Cup . Josef Bican played for Austria, Czechoslovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. László Kubala and Alfredo Di Stéfano also played for three countries.

Nowadays football players are entitled to play for two or more national teams in other countries, mostly due to family ties. For example, Mesut Özil was eligible to play for the Turkish national team due to the origin of his family , but decided to play in the German national team .
