The Gambian national football team represents Gambia in international women's football . The team is organized by the Gambia Football Association .

history

In the late 1990s, women's football spread across the Gambia. A first team with 40 pre-selected players was formed in December 2007, but did not take part in any game recognized by the football associations FIFA or CAF .

In May 2009 a team was formed to take part in a tournament of the West African Football Union (WAFU) in August . In June the team won test matches against a team from Ziguinchor (Senegal) 6: 0 and against a Gambian selection 2: 1.

From 2014 there were attempts to build a team. A friendly against Guinea Bissau planned for the end of January was canceled at short notice. In November 2015, a Gambian selection played against the Scottish team Glasgow Girls FC , who were visiting Gambia. A friendly game against Cape Verde planned for August 2017 was canceled at short notice.

On September 16, 2017, the team had their first official international game against Guinea-Bissau. The team was coached by Monika Staab in October and November 2017 .

At the end of February and May 2018, the team played in two friendly matches against Guinea-Bissau and Mali . In the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Women in 2018 , the Gambian team went to, but retired in the second round against Nigeria of which went on to win the title. After the unsuccessful tournament qualification, a friendly match against Ethiopia was not scheduled again until June 2019 , but the football association canceled it at short notice. A friendly against Guinea-Bissau on June 18, 2019 ended 1: 1.

U17

The U-17 team qualified for the U-17 World Cup for women in Azerbaijan in 2012. The team lost all three group games significantly and was bottom of the group.

In October 2016, the death of former U-17 international Fatim Jawara attracted international attention. She drowned when a refugee boat sank in the Mediterranean.

In December 2017, the U-17 team took part in qualifying for the 2018 U-17 Women's World Cup, but was eliminated in the first round.

U20

In the summer of 2019, the Gambian Football Association founded a U-20 team that was trained by Foday Bah. Most of the players had previously played for the U17s. In August, the selection won a friendly against Liberia 3-2.

Trainers

At the end of 2007 Mariama Sowe , Choro Mbenga and Bubacarr Jallow (also: Buba Jallow) were commissioned to put together a national team. In spring 2009 the trio was activated again under Jallow's direction. Around 2012, Jallow led the U-17 team with Sowe as an assistant.

Mariama Sowe was head coach at the end of 2015 and took over the post again in May 2017. You assist Foday Bah.
