Mbassey Darboe (nickname Messi , born around 2000 ) is a Gambian soccer player .

From at least 2012 Darboe played for New Town FC . In autumn 2012 she was the captain there. In early 2013 she received an award as the best player in the Brikama Female League.

From January 2016 at the latest, she played for Interior FC . In April 2016 she was nominated as Gambian Sportswoman of the Year. In the 2017/2018 season she was one of the most successful goal scorers in the league.

National team

In a friendly against Cape Verde planned for August 2017 , Darboe was part of the Gambian national team . However, the game was canceled at short notice.

On September 16, 2017, she played the first official international game between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Darboe was nominated to qualify for the 2018 Africa Cup of Nations , but was unable to participate due to an injury. The Gambia were eliminated in the second round against Nigeria , which later won the title.
