Mercy Akide-Udoh (* 26. August 1975 in Port Harcourt , Rivers , Nigeria as Mercy Akide ) is a former Nigerian football player . She is 1.89 m tall and has held the position of a striker .

Life

Akide grew up in Nigeria. She has two brothers. Akide attended Holy Rosary Secondary School in Port Harcourt. She has lived in the USA since 1999 . Akide has been married to Nigerian sports journalist Colin Udoh since November 2004 . The couple have two children and live in Virginia Beach . Akide is nicknamed Marvelous Mercy , Goals Mother, and Merciless Mercy .

Career

Akide started playing soccer at the age of five.

Akides' speed was noticed from early childhood in 400 , 800 and 1500 meter races against older competitors at the Holy Rosary Secondary School. At the age of 12 she was a regional table tennis master.

As a player

society

Akide's professional career as a player began in Nigeria with the Garden City Queens. She later played for the Jegede Babes. In 1995 Akide played for the Ufuoma Babes. She later worked for Pelican Stars FC .

Akide studied from 1999 for four years on a football scholarship at Milligan College in Tennessee . From 1999 to 2000 she played for college in the Tennessee Valley Athletic Conference . She scored 42 goals.

Akide then played a season for the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the W-League .

In 2001 Akide played for San Diego Spirit in the newly formed Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA). She was the first African woman in the WUSA. She scored 4 goals in 28 games.

Akide later played for the Boston Breakers in WUSA.

From 2003 Akide played again for three seasons for the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the W-League and was with this 2003 champions. Akide was the top scorer this season.

In parallel, Akide played from January 2003 to December 2003 for the Virginia Beach Submariners, a reserve team for the Virginia Beach Mariners , and until January 2004 for the Loyola Marymount University Lions.

National team

Akide was first appointed to the Nigerian national team in 1994 .

Akide is the top scorer for the Nigerian national team.

World championships

Akide took part in the 1995 World Cup. It was used in a preliminary round match . Nigeria were eliminated in the preliminary round.

Akide also took part in the World Cup in 1999 . She played all three preliminary round matches and the quarter-finals that followed . Akide scored a total of two goals. In the quarter-finals against Brazil , she managed to equalize 3: 3 towards the end of regular time, but Nigeria was eliminated after a 3: 4 nV.

Akide took part in the 2003 World Cup again. She played all three preliminary round matches . Nigeria were eliminated point and goalless in the preliminary round.

Akide played a total of 8 games and scored 2 goals in three world championships .

Akide played 5 World Cup qualifiers for Nigeria and scored 3 goals.

Olympic games

Akide first took part in the 2000 Olympic Games with Nigeria . She scored two goals in all three preliminary round matches, making her the only goalscorer in her country to be eliminated in the preliminary round.

In 2004 Akide again took part in the Olympic Games with Nigeria . It was used in both preliminary round matches and in the subsequent quarter-finals . Akide scored two goals, making her country's only goalscorer at the tournament. In the quarterfinals against Germany Akide achieved the interim lead to 1-0, but Nigeria lost 2-1 and was eliminated from the tournament in sixth place.

Akide has scored four goals in six games in two Olympic Games, making her country's record goalscorer at the Olympics.

After the 2004 Olympics, Akide was no longer included in the national team.

African Championships

Akide took part in the 1998 African Championship in their home country with Nigeria . With a 2-0 win in the final against Ghana , Nigeria became African champions . Akide was the tournament's most successful goalscorer.

Akide also took part in the African Championship with Nigeria in 2000 . Nigeria became African champions again with a 2-0 final against hosts South Africa and Akide was the tournament's top scorer with seven goals.

In 2002 Akide took part again with Nigeria in the African Championship in her home country. Nigeria became African champions by beating Ghana 2-0 in the final and Akide won the title for the third time in her career.

As a trainer

After ending her playing career, Akide has been working as a youth coach since 2006. From 2008 to 2013 she worked for Virginia Beach City FC . From 2015 Akide was a coach at the Virginia Rush Soccer Club.

In 2016 Akide became assistant coach for Virginia Beach City FC in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

Akide holds a National Youth Coaching Certificate from the United States Soccer Federation .

Akide is one of four soccer players, along with Lorrie Fair , Ronnie Fair and Julie Foudy , who are seen in the documentary Grass Ceiling in the WUSA, which was released on October 10, 2004 .
