San Diego Spirit was an American women's soccer team from San Diego . The team played in the 7,000-seat Torero Stadium at the University of San Diego for their home games.
history
The San Diego Spirit-owned team, owned by Cox Enterprises , began playing in 2001 in the newly formed Women's United Soccer Association , the world's first women's soccer professional league . The team around players like Shannon MacMillan , Julie Foudy and Mercy Akide narrowly missed the play-off round of the top four teams with three points behind fourth-placed Philadelphia Charge in the opening season as fifth after seven wins, draws and losses . After San Diego Spirit had finished the season as penultimate in the second season, succeeded in the 2003 season as third in the table to move into the finals. There the team failed in the semifinals on Atlanta Beat .
In late 2003, the team disbanded when the league had to cease operations due to financial problems.
