Cox Enterprises is an American media company based in Atlanta , Georgia .

The company grew out of the Dayton Daily News , which the schoolteacher, reporter and eventual governor of Ohio and presidential candidate James Middleton Cox founded in Dayton , Ohio in 1898 . The company has 17 daily and 25 weekly newspapers and 15 regional television stations. The 48,000 employees generated sales of almost 16 billion US dollars in 2013. In addition, part of Manheim Auctions , one of the largest auction houses in the automotive sector for Cox Group.

Cox Enterprises is run by James C. Kennedy , a grandson of James M. Cox. The company is family owned. Half is owned by Anne Cox Chambers , daughter of James M. Cox. The other half belongs to James C. Kennedy and Blair Kennedy Parry-Okeden, the children of their sister Barbara Cox Anthony, who died in 2006 . This makes the family one of the richest Americans.
