The Virginia Beach Mariners Soccer Club is a former American soccer club from Virginia Beach , Virginia . The club was founded in 1994 and last played in the USL First Division , the second highest division in North American football at the time.
history
The club was founded in 1994 as Hampton Roads Hurricanes. After the first season, the Hurricanes became the Mariners. In 1997 the club did not play any games and joined the following season in the A-League, the forerunner of the United Soccer Leagues . Two years later, the club moved into the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
In 2003 the club was renamed again and has been called Virginia Beach Mariners since then. To date, the club has not been able to achieve any notable successes.
Since 2006, a reserve team of the club has played as "Virginia Beach Submariners" in the USL Premier Development League .
On March 30, 2007, the club announced its resignation from the current game operations. The reasons for this were the withdrawal of the club's owners.
The club's reserve team was taken over by the W-League club Hampton Roads Piranhas . Under this name, the club continued to play in the Premier Development League.
