The United Soccer League (USL) is an umbrella organization for several North American soccer leagues .

It is the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) and the Canadian Soccer Association Canadian Soccer Association connected (CSA).

The USL includes the USL Championship , the USL League One and the USL League Two in men's football. In addition, it organizes the junior leagues (both women and men or girls and boys) Super-20 League (17 to 20 years) and Super Y-League (13 to 17 years).

The USL Championship and USL League One are professional, the other leagues are semi-professional or amateur leagues.

history

What is now the USL began in 1986 as the Southwest Indoor Soccer League . From 1989 an outdoor season was played in addition to indoor soccer, the league was now called the Southwest Independent Soccer League . In 1990/91 it changed its name again to Sunbelt Independent Soccer League , then a year later to United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL) . In 1995 the name was changed to United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues and two leagues were introduced: The Professional Pro League and the Amateur League Premier League . The following year, USISL introduced the Select League , made up of the best teams in the Pro League and Premier League , in hopes of being recognized by FIFA as the second highest American football league. In 1997 the Select League merged with the previously independent A-League to form a new A-League within the USISL. In 1999 the USISL changed its name to United Soccer Leagues (USL).

The master of the Second Division can be promoted to the First Division, provided that he meets the conditions of the USL and the USSF Association and there is a place in the First Division. There is no relegation regulation, but an introduction is being considered.

The average attendance in the USL First Division has increased continuously since 1999, in 2005 it was 4,527 in the regular season and 12,498 in the play-offs.

The USL was sold by Nike to the investment company NuRock Soccer Holdings on August 27, 2009 . The consequence of the sale was that many teams decided to found their own league. The new North American Soccer League, based on the professional soccer league in the 70s and 80s, should start operating in the 2010 season. Due to legal disputes between the USL and representatives of the NASL, the USSF intervened on January 7, 2010 and initially prohibited the NASL from operating in the league. As a compromise proposal, the USL First Division's league operations were suspended for the time being and the USSF D2 Pro League installed in its place . There is a USL and NASL Conference with six teams each. So far, this regulation only exists for the 2010 season.

On September 8, 2010, the USL announced that from the 2011 season the USL First Division and USL Second Division are to be combined into one. The new USL Professional Division will consist of teams from the USA, Canada and the Caribbean.

In 2015 the USL Pro was renamed the United Soccer League. In the same year, the women's soccer leagues USL W-League and W-20 League, which were under the control of the United Soccer Leagues Organization, ceased operations.

In 2017 the United Soccer League was recognized as the official 2nd division by the USSF. In the same year the USL developed the so-called USL Division III League, from which the USL League One later emerged. This applied to the USSF for the official 3rd division of the country.

For the 2019 season there will be a complete structural change in the individual leagues. This includes both a name change and a change in the appearance of the individual leagues. For the first time, the USL League One will also be introduced as a completely new league.
