The regular sesaon took place from March to September 2016. In this, the clubs competed in a round-robin tournament with a return game against the other clubs from the same conference. The other games were played against regional competitors from the same conference. The eight best clubs from the two conferences qualified for the play-offs, which took place on September 30, 2016. In these the respective conference champions were determined, the two conference winners then met in the final, the USL Championship , on October 23, 2016.

Changes compared to 2015

For the 2016 season, five more franchises are taking part in the United Soccer League. These are the Swope Park Rangers , Orlando City B , the Rio Grande Valley Toros , Cincinnati FC and Bethlehem Steel FC .

The Austin Aztex explained that the team will expose the season in 2016 because no suitable match was found. The actual home stadium, House Park , was damaged by a flood in 2015.

In August 2015, the league announced that in future each team would play 30 games in the regular season. In recent years, 28 games have been played per club.
