The Football Club Cincinnati , shortly FC Cincinnati , is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Cincinnati , Ohio .

The franchise, founded in 2015, played three seasons in the United Soccer League , the second highest division in North American football , from 2016 to 2018 . For the 2019 season, the franchise switched to Major League Soccer.

In May 2015 the first rumors surfaced that a USL franchise would be created in Cincinnati. It was announced that a partnership with the NFL franchise Cincinnati Bengals is to be formed so that a new football club can be founded.

Cincinnati FC was founded on August 12, 2015. The owner is a community of owners around CEO Carl H. Lindner III, co-owner of the American Financial Group. On the day it was founded, the former US international John Harkes was introduced as coach.

In the first season, the team achieved three league records in terms of visitor numbers at home games. On April 16, 2016, 20,497 spectators saw the game against Louisville City FC . This record was broken on May 14, 2016, with 23,375 spectators watching the game against Pittsburgh Riverhounds . Another record was set on September 17, 2016, with 24,376 spectators watching the game against Orlando City B.

After the regular season 2016, FC Cincinnati reached third place in the Eastern Conference and qualified for the play-offs. There they lost to the Charleston Battery . Due to the successful first season, the team received a lot of media attention and started talking about an expansion in Major League Soccer .

For the 2017 season, the South African Alan Koch became the new coach of the USL franchise. The team was able to draw further attention with victories in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2017 , as they were able to prevail against two teams from the MLS. In the end you reached the semifinals.

For the 2019 season, the franchise switched to Major League Soccer . As part of this, the franchise will move to a new stadium, which should be completed in 2021. The first season ended as the worst team in the league. Both in the Eastern Conference and in the overall table, FC Cincinnati came last.
