The Louisville City Football Club is an American football franchise the USL Championship in Louisville , Kentucky .

history

founding

After the owners of the USL Pro team Orlando City SC announced their move to Major League Soccer , Wayne Estopinal, President and founder of the architecture company TEG Architects, took over the license for the USL Pro and founded Louisville City FC together with other investors . The team takes on both the Orlando City license and team colors. A former player and assistant coach of the Cities was signed as the first coach. Irishman James O'Connor was introduced as Louisville City's new and first coach.

First season

After three wins in four preparation games, City FC started their first USL season on March 28, 2015. The team won 2-0 against Saint Louis FC . The first goalscorer in the history of the franchise was the Dane Magnus Rasmussen. The regular season ended the team in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference. In the play-offs, the team failed in the semifinals against the eventual USL Championship winner Rochester Rhinos.

The 2016 season ended just like the previous one. Again, Louisville City FC came to the semi-finals of the play-offs.

USL Championship 2017 and 2018

In 2017 Louisville took first place in the Eastern Conference. In the subsequent play-offs, the team made it to the final of the USL Championship. There they won 1-0 against the Swope Park Rangers. The winning goal scorer was the English footballer Cameron Lancaster.

In 2018, Louisville City FC finished second in the Eastern Conference and again won the USL Championship. During the season, coach James O'Connor moved to Orlando City . A little later John Hackworth took over the team.

The home games are played at Louisville Slugger Field. The ballpark holds 13,131 spectators. The Louisville Bats minor league baseball team also plays in this stadium.

The team is building a new 11,000-seat stadium in the Butchertown neighborhood, east of downtown, and plans to open the new stadium for the 2020 season.
