The Phoenix Rising Football Club , in short Phoenix Rising is an American football franchise the USL Championship in Scottsdale , Arizona .

history

On March 13, 2014, Arrowhead Advertising owner Kyle Eng founded the Arizona United SC soccer franchise. United took over from Phoenix FC , who had decided to retire from the USL Pro the day before.

First season (2014)

In the very short time between founding and the start of the season, Arizona United managed to set up a complete team, coaching team and management. In addition, a stadium and the necessary infrastructure were found. The team reached the 7th place in the regular season in the 2014 season, but could not qualify for the play-offs. With Michael Dellorusso a college coach was engaged. On April 12, 2014, the team lost their first USL Pro game against Oklahoma City Energy . A week later United celebrated their first win. Sacramento Republic was beaten 2-1. At the end of the season, the team won four times in the last five games, but still just failed to qualify for the play-offs.

In the US Open Cup 2014, the team met the Portland Timbers U-23 in the second round and defeated them 3-2. In the third round, the Oklahoma City Energy FC could be defeated. Then they met LA Galaxy in the fourth round . The MLS team won 2-1 here.

2017 season: new owner and name

On August 31, 2016, the previous owner Kyle Eng sold his majority stake in the USL franchise to Berke Bakay, CEO of the Kona Grill restaurant chain, and David Farca. Farca also became president of the club, but retired a little later. On November 28, 2016, the franchise was renamed Phoenix Rising FC. On March 25, 2017, the first game took place in the newly built Phoenix Rising FC Soccer Complex. A total of 6,890 people watched the game, which set a new franchise record. The first game in the new stadium and under the new name was won on April 8, 2017.

Three international players were signed for the 2017 season. Former Mexican international Omar Bravo moved to Phoenix on February 9, 2017. In the same month Shaun Wright-Phillips could also be signed. In April, Didier Drogba, the third player, was introduced as a new addition. This also received owner shares in the franchise.

The team started the season with two defeats and two wins. At the end of April, the previous coach and Director of Soccer Operations Frank Yallop resigned from his office for personal reasons. The previous assistant coach Rick Schantz took over on an interim basis. On May 22, 2017, a new coach was presented with the Frenchman Patrice Carteron . This placed the team in 5th place in the Western Conference and thus secured entry into the play-offs for the first time in the history of the franchise. There you lost to the Swope Park Rangers on penalties.

Since 2018

Advantage Sports Union Ltd bought a stake in Phoenix Rising FC in February 2018 to underpin its intentions to create another Major League Soccer franchise.

Stadion

The home games were played in the Peoria Sports Complex, a ballpark. In the spring, the stadium is the training ground for the major league baseball teams San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners . It is also used by various teams in the Arizona League, a minor league baseball league.

Since the 2015 season, the home games of Arizona United SC have been played at Scottsdale Stadium (Scottsdale, Arizona -Phoenix Metro Area-). With the 2016 season, the team will return to their original stadium (Peoria Sports Complex).

Construction of the Phoenix Rising FC Soccer Complex began in early 2017. This complex includes a stadium that can hold 6,200 spectators. The stadium can, however, be expanded if necessary. There are also facilities for training and fitness. The complex opened on March 25, 2017. On March 15, 2019, the complex's main stadium became Casino Arizona Field following a sponsorship deal between the team and a local Native American casino.
