The Sacramento Republic Football Club , in short Sacramento Republic , is a franchise of professional football - League USL Championship in Sacramento , California . From the 2023 season , the franchise will join Major League Soccer .

history

founding

On December 3, 2012, the USL Pro announced that a team from Scramento would take part for the 2014 season. The name and coat of arms of the team were decided through a public vote. On July 15, 2013, the former USA international Preki was signed as the first coach. At the beginning of the first season, around 5000 season tickets were sold.

First season

Sacramento Republic made its USL Pro debut on April 26, 2014. Against the Harrisburg City Islanders they lost 2-1. A total of 20,231 spectators saw the game at the sold out Hughes Stadium, which meant a new record in the USL Pro. With 17 wins from 28 games in the regular season, the team finished second at the end of the season. In the subsequent play-offs they prevailed against Orlando City and the Richmond Kickers and reached the final of the USL PRO Championship. Here the team won against the Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 and won the first championship in the first season. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup of the Republic FC launched in the second round. After victories against Ventura County Fusion and Fresno Fuego - both opponents played in the USL PDL - they lost to the San José Earthquakes in the fourth round .

Development since 2015

In the second season, the team made it to the fourth round of the US Open Cup. There they had to give up again to the San José Earthquakes, this time on penalties. On July 8, 2015 it was announced that the previous coach Preki would leave the club and go to England . On July 12, 2015, a new trainer, Paul Buckle, was introduced. The Englishman last coached the English football club Cheltenham Town . In terms of sport, Buckle achieved 5th place in the Western Conference in the United Soccer League in 2015. In the subsequent play-offs, the team was eliminated in the first round.

Major League Soccer (from 2023)

In October 2019 it was announced that the franchise would compete in Major League Soccer from the 2022 season . This would make Sacramento Republic the fifth MLS franchise from California after the LA Galaxy , CD Chivas USA (dissolved in 2014), the San José Earthquakes and Los Angeles FC . The team is to move to a new stadium that will have 20,100 seats and cost 300 million US dollars . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , entry in July 2020 has been postponed to the 2023 season .

Coat of arms and colors

The official colors of Sacramento Republic are red, maple green, and eggshell yellow. The coat of arms has the classic shield shape; on it is a nautical star and a California grizzly bear . The bear can be found on the state flag of California. In addition, there is the Latin lettering Urbs Indomita , which translates as unbridled city.

Stadion

The first home games of the 2014 season were played at the Charles C. Hughes Stadium. The stadium is located on the site of Sacramento City College. It has a total of 20,311 spectators. In the middle of the 2014 season they changed their home stadium and moved to Bonney Field . The newly constructed soccer stadium is located on the California Exposition and State Fair (Cal Expo) site in the city. It was completed in 2014 and can accommodate 8,000 spectators. For the 2015 season, the stadium was expanded to 11,442 seats. The stadium was renamed Papa Murphy's Park in 2017.
