The Nashville Soccer Club , shortly Nashville SC , is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Nashville in the US state of Tennessee .

history

USL

The founding of the Nashville Soccer Club was announced on May 19, 2016. The owner group DMD Soccer LLC consisted of David Dill, managing director of the health company LifePoint Health , Christopher Redhage, co-founder of the software company ProviderTrust and the former soccer player Marcus Whitney , who is now chairman of a foundation to promote innovation in the health sector. Whitney was also president of the former amateur soccer club Nashville FC.

Before the name Nashville SC was determined, all rights to the logo and team name were already taken over by Nashville FC, which ceased operations in the National Premier Soccer League in 2016 . Those responsible for the NFC got one percent of the shares in the new USL franchise from Nashville and a seat on the board. In September 2016, the franchise was named the Nashville Soccer Club.

On March 4, 2017, John Ingram, or Nashville Holdings LLC, acquired a large stake in DMD Soccer. Ingram was the biggest supporter of an MLS franchise in Nashville and wanted to be able to show a franchise in the upcoming application process for another place in Major League Soccer . On December 20, 2017, Nashville was awarded the 24th MLS franchise to participate in the 2019 or 2020 season.

On April 12, 2017, the Englishman Gary Smith was hired as the first coach and technical director.

The team made its first appearance on February 10, 2018 in a friendly against Atlanta United . The game was lost with 1: 3. On March 17, 2018, Nashville made his debut in the United Soccer League. This ended in a 2-0 loss to Louisville City FC . It was not until the third match day that they achieved their first competitive win. The first goal in the history of the franchise was scored by Canadian soccer player Michael Cox in a 1-0 win over Bethlehem Steel FC .

In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2018 , the team reached the round of 16, where they lost to Louisville City FC.

MLS

In August 2016, business leaders from Nashville's largest corporations formed the Nashville MLS Organizing Committee . This was used to control the planning and organization of a possible entry into Major League Soccer and the construction of a football stadium . This group was led by William F. Hagerty , who later became the US Ambassador to Japan. Both groups supported each other to promote football in Nashville.

In January 2017, a formal bid was made to Major League Soccer to get a franchise in the league. On March 4, 2017, businessman John Ingram bought the majority stake in DMD Soccer, which owns Nashville SC, through Nashville Holdings LLC . Ingram then followed the plans for a new MLS franchise. In August 2017, Mark Wilf , Zygi Wilf and Leonard Wilf joined as further investors. In October 2017, the group announced plans to build a stadium, which the city approved a month later.

On December 20, 2017, Nashville was officially awarded another MLS franchise. On February 20, 2019, the franchise was named Nashville SC. The USL Championship team under the same name will be disbanded at the beginning of the first season of the MLS club.

In August 2019, the German midfielder Hany Mukhtar became the first designated player in franchise history.

The home games are played in First Tennessee Park. The 10,000-seat baseball stadium is actually the home of the Nashville Sounds minor league team. Some games were also played at Nissan Stadium during the 2018 season.
