Qualification for Lamar Hunt US Open Cup

The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is an amateur football league in the United States of America . Together with the Premier Development League, it is regarded as the fourth highest level in US football; however, this status is unofficial.

This league is recognized by both the United States Soccer Federation and FIFA . It is formally affiliated with the United States Adult Soccer Association .

The NPSL is the successor to the Men's Professional Soccer League, in which only teams from the western United States have played.

The league's motto is A National League With A Regional Focus .

history

The NPSL is divided into six different divisions with its 31 teams, although not every division has the same number of teams. When it was founded in 2003, the league was still called the “ Men's Premier Soccer League ”, or MPSL for short.

Although today's NPSL is officially affiliated with the United States Adult Soccer Association , the teams still have the opportunity to qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , the trophy competition of the United States, through the USASA .

The league's motto is “A national league with a regional focus”. This is also reflected in the divisions into which the league is divided. Initially, after the foundation, the main focus was on the west of the USA in order to offer football clubs a good base there.

To date, the league has expanded so far that the NPSL already includes clubs from 19 different states. The league, which when it was founded was essentially just an offshoot of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), the second-highest women 's soccer league in the USA, expanded to the Midwest in 2005 . Some new teams were added and a new conference was founded.

Another cornerstone was laid in 2007 with the introduction of a conference in the northeastern United States and the inclusion of five clubs from the eastern part of the United States. The NPSL is still on the upswing and would like to expand the league largely so that the league network extends over the entire area of the United States.

It was announced for the 2010 season that 14 further expansion franchises will be added to the league network.

In the 2009 season, which lasted from May to August, a total of 27 teams competed in five divisions. However, not all teams had the same number of championship games played. Champion of the 2009 season was the last game of the season, in the so-called NPSL Championship Game , the team Sonoma County Sol , who defeated their opponent, the Erie Admirals SC , 2-1.
