The Brooklyn Italians are an American football team based in Brooklyn , New York City , New York .

The Italians were founded in 1949 and have played in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the fourth highest league in the country , since 2010 . They are one of the most successful semi-professional football clubs in the United States.

history

In 1949, Italian immigrant John DeVivo founded the Brooklyn Italians, which played in the Metropolitan Soccer League in the early 1950s. For the 1956/57 season, the team moved to the American Soccer League and were seventh at the end of the first season.

In 1961 the name was changed to Inter-Brooklyn Italians, in 1962 to Inter SC and 1963 to Boca Juniors. In 1964, the team played its final season in the ASL.

The Brooklyn Italians spent the next twenty years in various amateur leagues under different names. In 1979 the US Open Cup was won under the name Brooklyn Dodgers . In 1991 they renamed themselves again to Brooklyn Italians and won the US Open Cup that year. Already in 1981 and 1990 they reached the final of the cup.

By winning the cup, the team took part in the first edition of the CONCACAF Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. There they lost to the Mexican team Universidad de Guadalajara in two games. Also in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 1991 they could not prevail. The Italians won the first round against the Dandy Town Hornets from Bermuda . However, they lost in the second round to Puebla FC , the eventual winner of the tournament.

In 2010 they joined the National Premier Soccer League.
