In December 2017 the brothers Jorge and Jose Mas and the Japanese entrepreneur Masayoshi Son joined the group. On January 29, 2018, Major League Soccer awarded the group the contract for the league's 25th franchise , which started MLS gaming in the 2020 season . Inter Miami becomes the fourth MLS franchise from Florida after Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny , both of which were dissolved in 2001, and Orlando City .

On September 5, 2018, it was announced that the franchise would bear the Spanish name Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami , or Inter Miami for short . The name is intended to honor Miami's status as a cosmopolitan city that “embraces all cultures and communities” and “internationality, diversity, creativity and spirit” of the city. The colors used in the logo are black, white and pink.

Diego Alonso was signed as the first head coach in franchise history . The first competitive game took place as part of the 1st MLS game day on March 1, 2020 at Banc of California Stadium and was lost 1-0 at Los Angeles FC . Rodolfo Pizarro scored the first goal in franchise history on Matchday 2 in a 2-1 loss to DC United . The season was then interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Game operations resumed in early July with ghost games at the MLS is back tournament at Champion Stadium , part of the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando , Florida . There Inter Miami lost all 3 group games and dropped out after the group stage. The results from the group stage were included in the tables of the conferences and the overall table. With 5 losses in the first 5 games, Inter Miami became the worst MLS newcomer to date. Before the resumption of regular play in August, the 2018 world champion Blaise Matuidi was signed . Thereupon succeeded on the 3rd regular match day with a 3-2 against Orlando City the first competitive game win in the franchise history.

Coach history

Youth and player development

Inter Miami CF Academy

The franchise's youth work is brought together in the Inter Miami CF Academy. There are a total of six youth teams in different age groups, all of which play in the leagues of the US Soccer Development Academy.

Fort Lauderdale CF

At the beginning of October 2019, the Inter-Miami owner group was awarded a franchise for the third- tier USL League One , which is to function as the farm team of the MLS team. In early February 2020, the name Fort Lauderdale CF was published. The team plays their home games at Inter Miami Stadium in Fort Lauderdale .

Legal dispute with Inter Milan

The Italian football club Inter Milan has held the Inter brand for the US market since 2014 . Immediately after the name Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami , or Inter Miami for short , was published in September 2018, Inter Milan published a critical short message on Twitter with the wording "Inter Miami you say?" And a thoughtful emoji . In April 2019, the Milanese filed a complaint with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO declared in February 2020 that the Inter brand is a global synonym for the Italian football club and that there is a risk of confusion. In doing so, the USPTO did not follow the arguments of Inter Miami and Major League Soccer that other clubs already had this name (e.g. Internacional Porto Alegre , Inter Turku , Inter Leipzig or Inter Zaprešić ) and the name Inter was a general term for Football teams.
