The Lockhart Stadium was an American football - stadium as well as the football stadium in the US city of Fort Lauderdale in the state of Florida . The stadium was demolished in 2019 to build the Inter Miami Stadium on the same site .

history

Built in 1959, the plant is east of the airport Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and south of the Fort Lauderdale Stadium located. The main stand (south) and the opposite tier (north) are three quarters of the length around the playing field. The back-end stands run around the corners of the playing field, but are not connected to the longitudinal stands. The stadium does not have a roof and there are 20,450 seats for visitors. There are also three conference and event rooms next to the stadium. The largest room can hold a maximum of 400 people and 250 people for banquets .

Until 2010, Lockhart Stadium was home to the Florida Atlantic University NCAA football team called Florida Atlantic Owls . In October 2011 they moved into the new FAU stadium . In addition, the football teams of Fort Lauderdale High School, Stranahan High School, Northeast High School Oakland Park and Dillard High School used the stadium.

In 1977, a football team named Fort Lauderdale Strikers ( NASL ) first appeared at the sports facility. Until 1983 the team for which u. a. and Gerd Muller and George Best competed, native to the sports venue. In 1988 there was again a team called the Fort Lauderdale Strikers ; who played in the ASL in 1988 and 1989 and was a member of the APSL from 1990 to 1994 . From 1994 to 1997 the third team of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers existed ; this time they were represented in USL-2 . Since 2011, the fourth team with the name Fort Lauderdale Strikers ( NASL ) occurs; the team was called Miami FC until February 2011. The Strikers lost their first game in April 2011 at their home stadium in front of 6,402 spectators with 1: 2 against FC Edmonton .

From 1998, it was MLS the Miami Fusion , another tenant of the stadium. After three years, the merger was withdrawn from gaming operations due to financial problems. In 2011 the gridiron football team of the Fort Lauderdale Barracudas of the newly formed SFL played one season at Lockhart Stadium.

On August 10, 2011, the national soccer teams of Honduras and Venezuela met in Fort Lauderdale. The Hondurans won 2-0 goals in front of 13,133 visitors.

The new MLS franchise Inter Miami wants to rebuild the Lockhart Stadium, which has been unused since 2016, in order to use it for two seasons from 2020, as the construction of the new stadium complex with hotel, shopping center and office park for around one billion euros is further delayed. The playing field is to be rotated by 90 ° and after the construction work will offer 18,000 seats. Instead of the concrete stands, the new stadium would have steel stands. If the city of Fort Lauderdale approves the plans on March 19, 2019, Inter Miami plans to invest 60 million US dollars (about 53 million euros) in the stadium and a modern training complex with an academy and training center around it. It should offer seven large playing fields. There are also six additional fields (three large and three small). The construction work should start as soon as possible and be carried out by May 2020. After Inter's move, a permanent United Soccer League team will be based in Fort Lauderdale . In May 2019, the demolition of the stadium began in order to build the Inter Miami Stadium on the same site .
