South Scotland is one of the eight Scottish electoral regions for the election of the Scottish Parliament . It was created under the Scotland Act of 1998 under the name South of Scotland . In the course of the revision of the electoral regions in 2011, they were renamed South Scotland and the region was given small areas, including the Council Area Midlothian . In contrast, the areas of the Council Area North Ayrshire went to the electoral region of West Scotland . South Scotland includes the south of Scotland with the cities of Ayr , Cumnock , Dumfries , Galashiels , Hawick , Kilmarnock , Prestwick and Troon . As South of Scotland , the cities of Irvine and Stevenston also fell into this electoral region. The first elections took place during the parliamentary elections on May 6, 1999.
The regions of South Scotland border from west to east: West Scotland, Central Scotland and Lothian .
Geographical breakdown
The South Scotland region comprises nine constituencies from the council areas of East Ayrshire , East Lothian , Dumfries and Galloway , Midlothian , Scottish Borders , South Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire . Formerly included areas of the North Ayrshire Council Area were added to the West of Scotland electoral region as part of the revision of the constituencies. The constituencies were named and tailored to the constituencies of the British Parliament . Each constituency has a representative determined by majority voting . In addition, seven additional members are elected.
