John Lamont (born April 15, 1976 ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party . John Lamont should not be confused with the Scottish Labor politician Johann Lamont, who was active at the same time .

Political career

For the first time Lamont appeared in the British general election in 2005 to elections at the national level. In his constituency of Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk , he received the second highest share of the vote behind the Liberal Democrat Michael Moore and thus missed the entry into the British House of Commons . In the 2007 Scottish general election , he ran for the direct mandate of the constituency of Roxburgh and Berwickshire . Lamont won the elections ahead of the Liberal Democrat Euan Robson , who had held the mandate since 1999. Compared to the 2005 general election, Lamont was able to increase its voting share in the 2010 general election in the constituency of Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk by around 5%, but missed the direct mandate again. As part of the 2011 constituency reform, the Scottish parliamentary constituency of Roxburgh and Berwickshire was dissolved and largely replaced by the newly created constituency of Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire . In this, Lamont ran for the 2011 parliamentary elections and won the direct mandate from the SNP candidate Paul Wheelhouse . After the election, Lamont was appointed to whip the Conservative faction in parliament.

After Lamont missed the mandate for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk in the general election in 2015 , he finally succeeded in gaining a majority in his home constituency in the early general election in 2017 and thus gaining a seat in the British lower house. With a vote increase of 17.9%, he prevailed against the incumbent SNP politician Calum Kerr .
