Johann Lamont

Johann Lamont (born July 11, 1957 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Labor Party and the Co-operative Party .

Life

Lamont comes from a Gaelic-speaking family whose roots lie on the Hebridean island of Tiree . She attended Woodside Secondary School in Glasgow and then went to the University of Glasgow , which she graduated with a master's degree . Lamont received her educational qualification at Jordanhill College of Education and subsequently taught English and history at Castlemilk High School , Rothesay Academy and Springburn Academy for 20 years . Lamont is married and a mother of two. She lives in Glasgow with her husband.

Political career

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 , Lamont ran for the constituency of Glasgow Pollok and won the mandate with a clear lead over the SNP candidate Kenneth Gibson . As a result, she moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 , 2007 and 2011 , Lamont defended her constituency.

Lamont was Deputy Minister for Community Affairs from October 2004 to November 2006 and then Deputy Minister of Justice until the end of the legislature. As a result of the poor result for the Labor Party in the 2011 general election, Iain Gray resigned from the position of party chairman. In the elections for his successor, Lamont was able to win the largest share of the vote with 51.77% and served for several years as chairman of the Scottish Labor Party. In the 2016 parliamentary elections, Lamont was defeated by the SNP candidate Humza Yousaf and subsequently left parliament.
