The 2007 general election in Scotland was the third election to the Scottish regional parliament . Scotland has been ruled by a Labor-Liberal Democratic coalition government since 1999, under Prime Minister Jack McConnell since 2002 . The Scottish National Party (SNP) got 47 seats, the Labor Party (Labor Party) 46, the Tories (Conservatives) 17, the Liberal Democrats 16 and the Greens two. One seat went to an independent candidate.

The new Scottish Parliament met for the first time on May 9, 2007, on May 16, Alex Salmond was elected First Minister with votes from the SNP and the Greens, with the Conservatives and Liberals abstaining. Salmond was thus a minority government of the SNP.
