The Scottish Green Party (in Scottish Gaelic : Pàrtaidh Uaine na h-Alba ) is a green party in Scotland and an independent member of the European Green Party .
history
Until 1990 the Scottish Greens were part of the Green Party of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (as it was then called) when it became independent as the Scottish Green Party . This separation from the party of origin was not based on political differences, rather it was intended to support the Green demand for a decentralization of Great Britain and the independence struggle in Scotland .
The party supported the campaign for independence in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum and is in favor of a second independence referendum in 2017.
elections
In the 1999 elections to the first Scottish Parliament , Robin Harper was elected in the Lothians region , making him the first Green MP in Great Britain. The party benefited from the fact that the independent Scottish Parliament is elected through a combination of majority and proportional representation.
In 2003 the Scottish Greens were able to expand their position significantly, with 6.9% of the vote they won seven of 129 seats.
In the 2007 elections, the party suffered a setback, she lost a third of their votes and five out of seven seats. In the local elections taking place at the same time (and for the first time with STV ), the Greens were able to win eight new council seats: five in Glasgow and three in Edinburgh .
In May 2011 , the Green Party won 4.4% of the vote and two seats in the Scottish Parliament. Compared to the 2007 election (4.0%), there was again a slight increase and the number of seats was also maintained. The alliance partner of the Green Party, the SNP , won an absolute majority of the seats for the first time. The SNP also takes a number of green positions, including phasing out nuclear power and expanding renewable energies to 100% of Scottish energy needs by 2020. In the Scottish parliamentary election in May 2016 , the party won 6.6% of the list votes and 6 seats in the 129th MPs counting Scottish Parliament.
