LMP - Magyarország Zöld Pártja (short: Zöldek ; German Green Party of Hungary , short Green ; until 2020: Lehet Más a Politika , German Politics can be different ) is a political party in Hungary . It was founded in 2009 out of a non-governmental organization that had emerged the year before with the aim of reforming the Hungarian political system and the polarized Hungarian political culture .

The LMP has been a full member of the European Green Party since November 2011 .

subjects

The main topics of the LMP include environmental protection and sustainability as well as the fight against corruption, which is widespread among the Hungarian political elite . To overcome the current strong polarization of the Hungarian party system and society between apparently irreconcilable left and sometimes extreme right positions, the LMP wants to promote a deliberative political style that should lead to comprehensive participation of all social classes in the political system. This is intended to reduce the often lamented distance (and the resulting disenchantment with politics ) between the elites and the people.

history

In the European elections in 2009 , the LMP received 2.6% of the vote, which was a success; however, it failed to make it into the European Parliament .

András Schiffer was the LMP's top candidate for the 2010 general election . The party achieved 7.44% of the vote in the election and thus jumped the five percent hurdle applicable in Hungary .

The Hungarian pirate party Kalózpárt , which had joined the LMP and was active as a working group in the LMP, split off from the LMP in 2012. At the end of 2012 eight of the 15 parliamentarians resigned from the LMP after Schiffer agreed to work with the social democratic MSZP or the opposition platform “ Together 2014! “Refused, but did not rule out a collaboration with the right-wing extremist Jobbik . Under the leadership of the previous parliamentary group leader Benedek Jávor , the resigned MPs founded a new party in February 2013 under the name Dialog for Hungary .

In the 2014 parliamentary elections , the party received 5.3% of the vote and won 5 seats. On July 18, 2015 András Schiffer and Bernadett Szél were elected as co-presidents.

András Schiffer announced on May 31, 2016 that he was stepping down and giving back his mandate. Ákos Hadházy, a former Fidesz member who became known nationwide for the uncovering of a government-related corruption scandal, got Schiffer's place in parliament.

In September 2017, Bernadett Szél became a candidate for the prime ministerial and in the same month MSZP MP Márta Demeter announced that she would join the LMP faction in parliament.

Before the parliamentary elections in 2018 , the LMP did not rule out cooperation with Jobbik after the elections. In the election, the party received eight seats in parliament.

In October 2018, Bernadett Szél resigned from the LMP party and at the same time resigned her parliamentary group chairmanship. Szabolcs Szabó also left the party. Both remain as non-party members in parliament. Then Márta Demeter and László Lóránt Keresztes were elected as party leaders. Keresztes also took over the group chairmanship.
