The Democratic Alternative ( Alternattiva Demokratika , AD, English Democratic Alternative ) is a green political party in Malta and a member of the European Green Party .

The Democratic Alternative was founded in 1989 after the chairman and the leader of the Malta Labor Party , Toni Abela and Wenzu Mintoff , had resigned from their posts to form a group of environmental activists a new political party.

When the party first participated in a nationwide election in 1992, it won 1.7% of the vote, but did not have a seat in the Maltese parliament. In each of the following elections, the proportion of votes decreased; in 2003 it was only 0.7%. As a result, Abela and Mintoff left the party in 1998 to return to the Labor Party; Harry Vassallo became the new party leader .

In 2003 the AD campaigned for a yes in the referendum on Malta's accession to the European Union .

In the first European elections , in which Malta took part, the party won a remarkable 9.3% of the vote in 2004, but could not have any of the five Maltese members of the European Parliament .

In the Maltese parliamentary elections in 2008 , the AD improved its share of the vote to 1.3%, in the European elections in Malta in 2009 it came after its surprise success in 2004 with losses of almost seven percentage points to 2.4%. In the 2013 parliamentary elections , the party received 1.8% of the vote. She also currently has one seat each on the city councils of Attard , Sliema and Sannat .
