    London Assembly Council Chamber

The London Assembly is an elected legislative body in Greater London . Together with the Executive Mayor of London, it forms the Greater London Authority and is responsible for overseeing his official business, conducting investigations, changing the budget and making proposals.

This authority is based on the Greater London Authority Act 1999 , which was passed by the British Parliament . This was preceded by a referendum on May 7, 1998 in the future area of application, in which 72% of those who voted had spoken out in favor of setting up such a representation. The turnout in this referendum was 34.1%.

The London Assembly is elected with a mixed voting process , similar to that of the German Bundestag . There are 14 constituencies in which one member is elected by majority voting. The remaining 11 council members are elected by proportional representation , with party electoral lists for the whole city. There is a five percent hurdle here . The seats already allocated in the direct constituencies will be taken into account in the counting process, without resulting in overhang seats .
