Ludwig Mecklinger
Ludwig Mecklinger (born November 14, 1919 in Buchdorf ; † June 22, 1994 in Berlin ) was Minister of Health in the GDR .
Mecklinger graduated from high school in Eichstätt . From 1939 to 1944 he studied medicine in Leipzig , Hamburg and Berlin . In 1944 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was later a US prisoner of war in the Traunstein camp.
1945 to 1947 he was in the provincial administration of Saxony-Anhalt responsible for disease control, 1947/48 employee of the state health office and from 1948 to 1952 Minister for Labor and Health of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
From 1949 to 1954 he completed a law degree at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam. 1952 to 1954 he was deputy chairman of the central committee of the DRK of the GDR , until 1957 deputy chief of the medical service of the barracked people's police and the national people's army and until 1964 head of the military medical section at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald .
In 1964 he became professor with teaching position and vice-rector for military medicine as well as deputy minister for health, 1969 state secretary and first deputy minister and from 1971 to 1989 as successor to Max Sefrin minister for health. During his time as Minister of Health, among other things, the revision of the GDR law on termination of pregnancy with the passage of the law on the interruption of pregnancy in March 1972 and the cooperation with West German pharmaceutical companies, based on which drugs were tested on patients in the GDR.
From 1981 to 1990 he was a member of the People's Chamber and from 1986 to 1989 a member of the Central Committee of the SED .
Mecklinger was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold in 1972 and the honor bar for this medal in 1979.
