Election to the London Assembly 2000
The first election to the London Assembly took place on May 4, 2000 , parallel to the first election of the Mayor of London . Mixed proportional representation, a form of the additional membership system, with 14 directly elected constituencies and 11 London-wide additional seats was used in the assembly elections.
Starting position
This authority is based on the Greater London Authority Act 1999 , which was passed by the British Parliament . This was preceded by a referendum on May 7, 1998 in the future area of application, in which 72% of those who voted had spoken out in favor of setting up such a representation. The turnout in this referendum was 34.1%.
