The Scottish Liberal Democrats ( Scottish-Gaelic Libearal Deamocratach na h-Alba , Scots Scots Leeberal Democrats , German for example Scottish Liberal Democrats ) are one of the three state parties within the federal British Liberal Democrats . The others are the Welsh Liberal Democrats and the English Liberal Democrats . The Scottish Liberal Democrats are the fifth largest party in Scotland and have had five seats in the Scottish Parliament since 2016 .
History and present
The Scottish Liberal Democrats was formed by the merger of the Scottish Liberal Party with the Social Democratic Party in Scotland , as part of the party merger of the Liberal Party with the Social Democratic Party on March 3, 1988.
In the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 and 2003 , the party won 17 seats each. After these elections, the party formed a coalition government with the Scottish Labor Party in the Scottish Executive. In the subsequent Scottish parliamentary election in 2007 , the SLD lost a seat and the party went into opposition. In the UK House of Commons election in 2010 , the party won 11 seats in Scotland and the British Liberal Democrats formed a coalition with the British Conservative Party. In the 2011 election to the Scottish Parliament , the party lost 11 seats and from then on only had 5 seats. In the general election in 2015 , the party lost all but one seat. In the last Scottish Parliament election in 2016 , the party held its 5 parliamentary seats, but only became the fifth largest party.
