Colin Fox (born June 17, 1959 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP).

Political career

Fox attended Our Lady's School in Motherwell and Bell College in Hamilton . At first he was active in the youth organization of the Labor Party , but then became a founding member of the SSP. In the first Scottish general election in 1999, Fox was placed first on his party's regional electoral list in the Lothian electoral region . Since the SSP was only able to get around 1.6% of the second vote in this region, Fox clearly missed entry into the newly created Scottish Parliament . Fox did not apply for the direct mandate of a single constituency. Also in 1999 he ran on the electoral list for the European elections , but won no mandate. In 2001 and again later in 2003, he unsuccessfully applied for a seat on Edinburgh City Council. For the British general election in 2001 Fox was set up for the constituency of Edinburgh South . He was able to collect 2.5% of the votes and thus clearly missed the direct mandate.

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2003 Fox again took first place on the regional electoral list of his party in the electoral region of Lothians. On the basis of the election result, he was able to enter the Scottish Parliament for the first time. After party leader Tommy Sheridan resigned from the party chairmanship in 2004 and finally founded the new Solidarity party in 2006 , all SSP MPs together formed the party leadership. In a close vote towards the end of 2004 it was decided to re-elect a single party leader. In February 2005 Fox was elected as the new party leader. A dual leadership was later installed and Fox has since led the party together with Frances Curran . Fox was also the top candidate for the SSP in Lothians in the 2007 parliamentary elections , but lost his mandate as a result of the election result and left parliament. Also in the following elections in 2011 , Fox ran as the top candidate, but missed the renewed entry into parliament.

controversy

In order to draw attention to the lack of measures taken by Parliament to ensure the right to demonstrate in front of the Gleneagles Hotel as part of the G8 meeting in 2005, Fox and some of his party colleagues disrupted Parliament's Question Time . As a result, he and three other SSP politicians were expelled from parliament for a month. His monthly earnings, as well as those of his employees, were withheld.
