Iain Gray
Iain Gray (born June 7, 1957 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Labor Party .
Gray attended Inverness Royal Academy and George Watson's college in Edinburgh . He then went to Edinburgh University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics. At Moray House , Gray then acquired the license to teach and was subsequently active as a math and physics teacher at Gracemount High School in Edinburgh. During the civil war in Mozambique , he taught there at an agricultural engineering school. He then joined the Scottish branch of the Oxfam aid organization for twelve years and worked in Cambodia and Zimbabwe , among others .
Political career
For the first time Gray appeared in the Scottish general election in 1999 to national elections. He applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh Pentlands and won the election in front of the conservative David McLetchie . Gray held various posts in the newly formed government. First he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health, then became Deputy Minister of Health at the end of 2000 and a year later became Minister of Social Justice. From May 2002 until the end of the legislative period, he finally held the post of Minister for Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning. In the 2003 general election , Gray lost his seat to David McLetchie and resigned from parliament.
He went to London and worked for the MP Alistair Darling . In the 2007 general election , Gray succeeded John Home Robertson and ran in the East Lothian constituency . He won the direct mandate and took the position of finance minister in the Labor Party's shadow cabinet . In 2008 he was elected party leader, replacing the outgoing Wendy Alexander . In the elections in 2011 , Gray defended his mandate with just 151 votes ahead of the SNP candidate . As a result, he resigned as party leader at the end of the year. Johann Lamont was elected to succeed him.
