Ian "Iggy" Gray (born July 22, 1963 in Sydney , † February 15, 2010 ibid) was an Australian football player . Gray won the Australian national championship three times with Marconi-Fairfield and came to 14 internationals for the Australian national team .

Career

In his youth, Gray played at Manly-Warringah alongside Bob Catlin and Gary van Egmond , before he began his career in the National Soccer League with the APIA Leichhardt Tigers in 1980 . In 1985 he moved to Marconi-Fairfield , with whom he was three times in a row in the championship finals between 1988 and 1990. He was victorious in the 1988 (5: 4 on penalties against Sydney United ) and 1989 (1: 0 against Sydney Olympic ). He won his third and final championship in 1993 when he led the team as captain in a 1-0 win over Adelaide City . 1995 Gray ended his career after 244 championship appearances for Marconi, which he booked the second most appearances within the club, only Tom McCulloch came twice more often.

National team

Gray was part of the squad in 1981 in preparation for the 1981 World Youth Championship in his own country, but did not make it into the final squad. He made his debut for the Australian national team in 1984 and also made his senior international debut during a lengthy tour that took the team to China, Great Britain and Italy. After being used in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup, among other things , it was only used again in 1990. He was part of the President's Cup squad in South Korea in 1991 and Indonesia in 1992 and ended his international career with a 6-1 win against the Solomon Islands on September 26, 1992 in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup .

Overall, he represented the Australian national team 35 times (6 goals), including 14 international matches.

After the active career

Gray stayed with football even after his retirement and coached various amateur and youth teams. In 2004 he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and honored with the Award of Distinction . Gray was found dead in his apartment on February 15, 2010 after failing to show up for a training session. Two days later, in connection with his death, a 22-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter , drug trafficking and theft . Research eventually led to the conclusion that Gray died of a heroin overdose . Numerous ex-national footballers attended his funeral, including Mark Bosnich , Robbie Slater and Steve Corica ; his former companion Tony Henderson gave the eulogy.
