Asian Zone / AFC

Asian zone

West Asia and East Asia each provided one World Cup participant. There were four preliminary round groups in each of the two regional blocks. The group winners qualified for the semifinals. In two knockout rounds, the World Cup final participants were determined. Due to the First Gulf War , the warring states Iran and Iraq should play their home games on neutral courts. Only Iraq followed this request and played its games in Calcutta ( India ), Kuwait City and the Saudi Arabian city of Ta'if . Iran, on the other hand, refused to play on neutral courts and was subsequently excluded from the qualifying tournament.

Oceanic Zone / OFC

Oceanic zone

Of the OFC , only Australia and New Zealand took part in the World Cup qualification. Then there were Taiwan and Israel, which were assigned to the Oceania group for political reasons. The four teams played the Oceania winner in a points round with home and away legs. The Oceania winner then had to compete against a runner-up from one of the three European groups of four in a playoff. The winner of this playoff qualified for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
