Qualification for the Soccer World Cup 1982

For the world championship tournament in Spain in 1982 a total of 107 associations had registered, including

• 34 teams from Europe (with hosts Spain, with Israel)
• 28 teams from Africa (two withdrew)
• 17 teams from Asia (excluding Israel)
• 10 teams from South America (with defending champion Argentina)
• 15 teams from North and Central America.
• 3 teams from Oceania

Since defending champions Argentina and organizers Spain were directly qualified and the World Cup tournament was played with 24 teams, 22 free places in the final round were available for the remaining 105 teams; went away

As Ghana and Uganda withdrew, only 103 national teams took part in the World Cup qualification, yet a new World Cup record.

European Zone / UEFA

33 teams from Europe registered to qualify for the 1982 World Cup. Then there was Israel, which also took part in the European qualification. Spain was automatically qualified to host the 1982 World Cup. The remaining 33 teams came in 7 groups, six groups of 5 teams and one group of three teams. From the groups of five, the first two qualified, from the group of three only the first qualified. The Federal Republic of Germany and Austria qualified together in Group 1, whereby the Federal Republic of Germany made a sovereign impression. All eight games were won, with a goal difference of 33: 3 goals. Switzerland failed in group 4 to Hungary and England, Luxembourg had no chance in group 5. The GDR had to admit defeat to Poland twice in the group of three (group 7) and only ended up in second place.

The following qualified: Belgium, FR Germany, England, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, Austria, Poland, Scotland, Soviet Union, Spain, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.

South American Zone / CONMEBOL

10 teams from South America registered. Among them Argentina, world champion of the last World Cup , which was automatically qualified as defending champion. The remaining nine teams were divided into three groups of three teams. The mode was a simple league system with two legs. The group leader in each group qualified for the 1982 World Cup.

It qualified: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zones / CONCACAF

A total of 15 teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean registered for World Cup qualification. These were initially divided into three zones (Northern Zone, Caribbean Zone and Central Zone). Two teams per zone qualified for the final group, in which everyone against everyone played a game. The two best in the group qualified from this final group of six for the 1982 World Cup. The final tournament took place within 21 days in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa .

African Zone / CAF

29 nations from Africa competed for two finals. After Ghana and Uganda withdrew and the Central African Republic was excluded because the entry fee was not paid, 26 teams remained. The qualification was played in the knockout system. In the first round, six teams still had a bye. In Round 2, Libya refused to play against Egypt, which meant they got to Round 3 without having played a single game.

Asian zone with Oceania / AFC and OFC

The qualification in Asia and Oceania was probably the most complicated qualification of the 1982 World Cup. 21 teams registered for the qualification, after the withdrawal of Iran the remaining 20 teams were divided into four groups. The classification criterion was mostly the geographical location. One nation from each group qualified for a final tournament in which the two World Cup participants were determined. The mode of the individual groups differed significantly. In group 1, 5 teams played a group winner in the first and second round, while in group 2 (5 teams) and group 3 (4 teams) a tournament was held in Riyadh and Kuwait City , in which everyone competed once. In Group 4 (6 teams), as was common in East Asia at the time, a round of division games was first added . For this purpose, 3 games were drawn. The team with the highest victory was placed in a group with the losers of the other two games, while the team with the highest defeat was assigned to the other two winning teams. In the groups of three, everyone played against each other once, the two best placed players then played in the knockout system, starting with the semi-finals for the qualifying place in the final tournament. The final tournament, which was played between the four group winners, again took place in league mode with a return leg. Since the point and goal difference between China and New Zealand was identical in the end, the two teams had to play a play-off game to participate in the World Cup.
