Cityscape
Georgetown is characterized by the contrast between representative buildings in the city center and the corrugated iron huts in the outskirts. Traditionally, most houses in the city in timber construction are built, the 1887-1889 built Town Hall , boasting ornate balconies and a projecting tower and the 1829-1834 built by the British colonial administration government building . Typical of the construction of these colonial buildings is their ornate, playful style and their painting in the brightest colors. Many stand on posts up to three meters high to protect the residents from soil moisture and flooding and at the same time to take advantage of all wind cooling options in the hot tropical climate. The 45 meter high tower of the Anglican St. George's Cathedral , which was inaugurated in 1892 and is one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, is unmistakable in the cityscape .
Lotus and giant water lilies of the genus Victoria , the national plant of Guyana, which can be especially admired in the large botanical garden , grow in numerous drainage canals that run through the city along wide avenues planted with flame trees and other flowering trees . - Georgetown is also known as the garden city of the Caribbean . This name, however, has nothing to do with the urban concept garden city of Ebenezer Howard to do, but rather is based on the strong greening the city.
history
Georgetown was founded under the name Longchamps during the French occupation of the colonies Essequibo and Demerara in 1781 . After the colonies were returned to the Netherlands in 1783 , the city was named Stabroek , after Nicolaas Geelvinck, Herr von Stabroek ( Belgium ), who was one of the directors on the board of the Dutch West India Company (Messrs. XIX).
The colonies of Essequibo and Demerara were occupied by the British from 1796 to 1802 and from 1803 to 1814 . In 1814 the colonies were officially transferred to the United Kingdom. Subsequently, the city was given its current name Georgetown, named after the British King George III .
In 1945 a fire destroyed large parts of the old town. There is a university in the city , the UG University of Guyana , founded in 1963 . The Guyana Zoological Park , which opened on January 1, 1952 , is located in the Bourda district , where the cricket stadium is also located, where the 2007 World Cricket Championship was opened . Georgetown has been the capital of Guyana since 1966. On June 13, 1980, Walter Rodney , historian and politician, was murdered in Georgetown in a bomb attack presumably initiated by the Guyanese government. In 2007 the Rio group held its 19th meeting in Georgetown. On July 30, 2011, a Boeing 737-800 operated by Caribbean Airlines broke while landing at Georgetown Airport. All passengers survived this accident.
